3 Postpartum Visits — Care for Mom & Newborn

Visit 1 — First 24–72 hours after discharge

  • Maternal check: assess bleeding, incision (if any), uterine tenderness/position, pain level, vital signs review, hydration and nutrition status, mood screening for early signs of baby blues or postpartum mood disorder.

  • Newborn check: color, temperature, breathing, feeding cues, weight check and diaper output review, cord/stump care guidance, jaundice awareness.

  • Breastfeeding support: latch assessment, positioning, correcting common latching issues, hand expression basics, frequency and duration guidance, troubleshooting nipple pain.

  • Household help: 1 hour of light housekeeping (tidying common areas, washing a few baby bottles/feeding supplies, washing and folding small loads of laundry, emptying trash, dish tidying).

  • Education and planning: safe sleep review, scheduling any needed follow-up with pediatrician/OB, emergency signs to watch for.

Visit 2 — 3–7 days after discharge

  • Maternal check: bleeding pattern update, pain management review, incision check, bowel/bladder function, sleep and energy assessment, continued mood screening.

  • Newborn check: weight trend and feeding adequacy, wet/dirty diaper count, jaundice reassessment, stool patterns.

  • Breastfeeding support: review and adjust latch/positioning, support for increasing milk supply (frequency, pumping tips), guidance on milk transfer, using a nipple shield if appropriate, basic pump setup and cleaning guidance.

  • Household help: 1 hour of light housekeeping (laundry help, bottle and pump part rinsing, surface cleaning in kitchen/baby area, restocking essentials like diapers/wipes if available).

  • Education and planning: infant soothing techniques, swaddling demonstration, breastfeeding troubleshooting plan, referral suggestions if additional lactation support needed.

Visit 3 — 10–14 days after discharge

  • Maternal check: continued wound/healing assessment, bleeding and menstrual return discussion, emotional well-being screening, contraception and activity guidance as appropriate.

  • Newborn check: growth and feeding reassessment, sleep patterns, continued jaundice monitoring, parental concerns addressed.

  • Breastfeeding support: troubleshooting persistent issues, guidance on combination feeding or paced bottle-feeding if needed, strategies for returning to work and pumping schedule planning.

  • Household help: 1 hour of light housekeeping (deep tidying of primary living areas, laundering baby clothes, sanitizing high-touch baby items, organizing baby feeding area).

  • Education and planning: review of developmental milestones to watch for, community resources and support groups, plan for any additional follow-up visits or referrals.

Notes and inclusions

  • Each visit includes documentation of findings and a brief care plan shared with the family.

  • Visits are adaptable to cesarean or complicated deliveries and to multiples; additional visits or extended time can be arranged if needed.

  • Light housekeeping is intended to support immediate postpartum recovery and newborn care; it does not include heavy cleaning, yard work, or complex household maintenance.

  • If urgent concerns arise during or between visits, families will be advised to seek immediate medical attention or contact their provider.

Our postpartum support includes two home visits for mother and baby focused on breastfeeding, pumping, and milk storage. During these visits you will:

  • Learn practical breastfeeding techniques: latch positions, frequency, signs of effective feeding, and how to manage common concerns (sore nipples, engorgement, low supply).

  • Receive hands-on guidance for pumping: choosing pump type, correct flange fit, effective pumping routines, and maintaining supply while separated from your baby.

  • Get clear instructions for safe milk storage: how long to store milk at room temperature, in the refrigerator, and in the freezer; thawing and warming guidelines; and labeling and handling best practices.

  • Gain help with feeding plans: combining breastmilk and expressed milk, establishing a schedule that fits your needs, and troubleshooting feeding challenges.

  • Obtain personalized support and education materials to take home for easy reference.

Visits are practical, easy to understand, and tailored to your situation so you feel confident feeding your baby.

How early should I book doula services?

We recommend reserving your spot in the second trimester to ensure availability, but we will do our best to accommodate later inquiries whenever possible.


Do you attend births in hospitals, birth centers, or at home?

Yes i support you in all birthing environments and collaborate with your chosen medical team to honor your preferences as long as by law doulas are allowed in the establishment.


What if I decide to change my birth plan?

Flexibility is central to our approach. We will adapt to any changes, update your plan, and provide continuous support so you feel confident with each decision.
